The Information for All Programme portrayed through a series of videos to promote inclusive knowledge societies

The videos were created as a part of IFAP’s Visibility Strategy aiming at raising awareness about the Programme’s mission and achievement.

IFAP released this week a series of videos presenting its mission, objectives and priorities. The intergovernmental Programme was launched in 2001. It promotes the consolidation of equitable and inclusive knowledge societies through better access, use, preservation and creation of information. The introductory video also provides an outline of IFAP’s structure and of its 6 priorities:

The videos feature an explanation of the scope of each priority, as explained by the IFAP Working Group Chairs.

The video on information for development underlines the basis of the concept and that effective access to and use of information can assist governments and citizens in achieving various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as quality education (SDG4), health and wellbeing (SDG3) and responsible consumption and production (SDG12). Information for Development Working Group Chair Mr Mano Verabathan highlighted IFAP’s Knowledge Societies Handback, which guides governments on how to use the information in a way that the societies can move forward.

For Information Literacy, the video makes a case for it in the context of fast-paced technological evolution as information literacy will help citizens maximize the benefits from these technological developments by enabling them to identify how and where to find the information they need.

The video on Information Ethics, emphasizes the importance of ethical and legal use of the emerging technologies, providing the best information and communication practice guidelines. Under this priority, IFAP seeks to assist the global efforts for data protection and privacy and for the prevention of the online radicalization of youth leading to violent extremism.

In the Information Accessibility video, Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Peru H. E. Mr  Victor Ricardo Luna Mendoza provides an example of work in the remote areas in Peru, elaborating some of the difficulties that residents of such regions could face in accessing information. He underlines that the private-public partnership to devise a realistic solution is critical in increasing information accessibility.

For the video on Information Preservation, the Information Preservation working group chair Mr Laszlo  Karvalics shares the significance of preserving historical information on climatology and notes that it is important to preserve the information in a way that future generations could also access it.

For the video on Multilingualism, the Vice-Chair of IFAP and Chair of the Multilingualism Working Group, Mr Evgeny Kuzmin, from the Russian Federation, highlights the importance of government’s role in creating an environment where all the languages are used and promoted online. Mr Kuzmin notes that IFAP is the only intergovernmental body that promotes multilingualism online along with the efforts for supporting information literacy and ethics, thus stressing the significance of this UNESCO Programme.

Through these videos, IFAP strives to expand its effort to disseminate information more effectively to further strengthen its communication and collaboration with stakeholders.
