New Gender Assessment study calls for greater participation of women in the private sector

The goal of this study has been to examine the factors influencing women’s participation in the private sector economy and to support the efforts of the national government, private sector actors and civil society organisations (CSOs) working to promote women’s economic empowerment. Its objectives are to identify and analyse gender-specific barriers that hinder women in pursuing business opportunities, securing decent jobs[1] and building successful careers in the private sector. The study also examines gender-specific factors affecting the involvement of men in the private sector economy. Finally, the report explores factors which facilitate the successful engagement of both women and men in private sector operations. In accordance with the findings, the report finishes by offering a series of recommendations for strengthening progress towards the equal participation and opportunities of both genders in the private sector economy. Data for the study was collected through a series of focus-group discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews (KIIs) in Baku, Khazar, Quba, Saatli, Shaki, Lankaran and Qabala.

When science, farming and youth converge

Home to hundreds of species of trees and bushes, the epic forests and rangelands of Azerbaijan form part of the Greater Caucasus mountain range and are a lifeline for 40 percent of the country’s farmers. But today, more than a million hectares of the precious land are drying up under the influence of logging, overgrazing and climate change. 

Animal husbandry - the science of breeding and caring for farm animals – was not being taught at vocational education schools and there were no certified specialists in this field. This means no one to advise on how to change the way people raised livestock so that it was more sustainable for the environment. UNDP at the heart of climate change action in Azerbaijan

UNDP’s ongoing partnership framework with the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan SOCAR came into effect in 2015, with a firm commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy intensity of SOCAR’s major facilities. This support is delivered through the project ‘Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions’ (NAMA), funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by UNDP. The project helps SOCAR in the implementation of its Climate Change Mitigation Strategy by promoting and upscaling GHG mitigation measures across three key dimensions: in construction design, transport and associated gas capturing.
