The UIS is the official source of data used to monitor progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) to ensure quality and equitable education for all. In particular, Target 4.a calls upon countries to “build and upgrade education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, non-violent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all”.

To monitor this target, the UIS is tracking the proportion of schools with access to electricity, the Internet and computers for pedagogical purposes, as well as producing a series of indicators on school conditions.* This information is collected globally through a questionnaire that was tested in all regions.

To promote the collection and use of the data, the UIS works closely with UNESCO and other international organizations, notably as a member of the Partnership on Measuring ICT for Development.  

While current UIS data focus on access to ICTs, the Institute is also developing a new framework and toolkit to help countries collect data on the ways in which these technologies are used by teachers, students, principals and school administrators. These resources are being developed with the Regional Centre of Studies on Information and Communication Technologies (CETIC) in Brazil. 

* The UIS produces indicators on the numbers of schools with access to drinking water and single-sex basic sanitation facilities, while working with partners to collect information on the extent to which infrastructure and materials are adapted for students with disabilities.
