Human Development Advances as Democracy Progresses in Bhutan
The National Human Development Report: Ten Years of Democracy in Bhutan by Bhutan’s Parliament and UNDP highlights positive development results during the ten years of democracy in the country. Bhutan’s growing democracy has helped advance development, with an independent judiciary, a vigorous parliamentary structure, an accountable and transparent government, and an emerging civil society, according to the Report.
Forging Stronger Partnerships for a Prosperous Bhutan
“The Round Table Meeting exemplifies the commitment made by the Royal Government of Bhutan to be a world leader in sustainable development, by pursuing the ambitious goal of Gross National Happiness and committing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” said Mr. Steiner. “The UN family is excited to be a partner on this dynamic development journey that is dedicated to leaving no one behind.”
Keeping Bhutan Carbon Neutral
The Kingdom of Bhutan is carbon negative, sequestering more carbon dioxide than it emits. Despite recent economic growth and development causing its national emissions to rise, it has pledged to remain carbon neutral by ensuring the capacity of its carbon sinks through forest protection, as well as through setting out plans for its cities to pursue low carbon development pathways.
