Ethiopia Humanitarian Emergency

Ethiopia saw a significant increase in internally displaced people (IDP). By the end of 2017, over 1.5 million IDPs were identified across 861 sites in the country. Moreover, the country is hosting almost a million refugees. Only a third of the IDP sites have access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, and only 5% with services for clinical management of rape for survivors. Over one million women of reproductive age are in urgent need of lifesaving SRH interventions including safe birth, maternal health and essential newborn care, requiring implementation of the Minimum Initial Service Package for reproductive health Psychosocial distress and lack of safe spaces for women and children, risk mitigation and response to incidents of gender-based violence (GBV), and reunification or alternative care for children separated from their families were identified as priority issues in the Protection Assessment conducted by the Protection Cluster. UNFPA has distributed 13,400 dignity kits and reached almost 40,000 people with reproductive health kits since January 2018, and will continue to lead the GBV sub-cluster in Ethiopia.
