Chad Humanitarian Emergency

Chad is facing multiple humanitarian crises due to underdevelopment and conflict in neighbouring countries. The country ranks 186th out of 188 countries in the Gender Inequality Index, making women and girls more vulnerable to discrimination and gender-based violence (GBV) during the crisis. In 2018, 4.4 million people will require urgent assistance, including 1.6 million who will need safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation facilities. Persistent insecurity and hostilities continue to drive displacements. Acute rainfall deficits last season in several regions of the Sahel and the conflict in the Lake Chad Basin has displaced more than 205,000 Nigerians to neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger. Chad now hosts over 400,000 refugees from the Central African Republic, Nigeria and the Sudan. The low level of funding in 2017, which did not reach 40% of the funding requirement, translated into limited humanitarian coverage. UNFPA is leading the gender-based violence sub-cluster in the country.
