The School Health and Nutrition webinar series provides monthly presentations by leading policy makers, researchers and implementers engaged in improving the health and education of children in low and middle income countries across the globe. The webinars cover all areas of school health and nutrition with speakers draw from organisations engaged in furthering the aims and objectives of the FRESH movement.

UNESCO is currently carrying out a review and update of the UN International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education (ITGSE) to ensure that the evidence on sexuality education is up-to-date and that the content reflects the contemporary needs of all learners.
As part of efforts to ensure all young people have access to comprehensive, life-skills based sexuality education, UNESCO screened a new video at the 18-July Eastern and Southern Africa Commitment Progress Review Meeting, on the side-lines of this year’s International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa.
On 7 December 2013, health and education ministers and representatives from 20 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa affirmed a landmark commitment supporting sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health services for adolescents and young people. In the two years since its endorsement, the region has already made significant progress.
Defined as “an age-appropriate, culturally relevant approach to teaching about sex and relationships by providing scientifically accurate, realistic, non-judgmental information”, sexuality education provides opportunities to explore one’s own values and attitudes and to build decision making, communication and risk reduction skills about many aspects of sexuality.
FRESH partners and colleagues from across the school health and nutrition community have come together to launch a new monthly School Health and Nutrition (SHN) Webinar series. The SHN webinar series will provide monthly presentations by leading policy makers, researchers and implementators engaged in improving the health and education of children in low and middle income countries.
In some countries, 85 per cent of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students experience homophobic and transphobic violence in school, 45 per cent of transgender students drop out. Homophobic violence also targets 33 per cent of students who are wrongly perceived to be LGBT because they do not appear to conform to gender norms.
In the early 2000s, the Mulwari Secondary School, located in the outskirts of Livingstone, Zambia, was deeply impacted by the high prevalence of HIV in the local community. Student learning outcomes suffered as a result, with just 32% of grade seven and 30% of grade nine students passing in 2004. “Before, our school was known as the grave school,” said one of the guidance counselors at Mulwari during a school visit in February 2016 as part of the second Learning Champions Forum (part of the Learning Metrics Task Force).
Students learn best in schools that provide safety and social support. However, some young people experience violence and harassment in, around, and on the way to school. This includes gender-based violence, which can take many different forms and can negatively impact students’ learning.
