Nominations open for the Red Ribbon Award to honour and promote community leadership and action on AIDS

UNAIDS and civil society partners, in collaboration with the organizers of the 21st International AIDS Conference, jointly announce a global call for nominations for the 2016 Red Ribbon Award. The award, which will be presented at the 21st International AIDS Conference, to be held in July 2016 in Durban, South Africa, honours community-based organizations for their contributions to the response to AIDS.

You are invited to join UNESCO in marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women. Education is the theme of this year’s campaign and UNESCO is proud to be participating in raising awareness of school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV), including violence against women.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign is taking place from 25 November to 10 December with the theme of “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Make Education Safe for All.” School-related gender-based violence (SRGBV) can be a serious barrier in realizing the right to education. It is estimated that 246 million girls and boys are harassed and abused in and around school every year.

Over 65 Religious Leaders, youth representatives, representatives from UN Family, Government entities and other partners from 17 Eastern and Southern Africa Countries gathered in a high level stakeholder consultative meeting, in Dar-es-Salaam Tanzania, early September 2015 to deliberate on their role towards fast tracking the ending of HIV and AIDS by 2030 and the implementation of the Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) commitment.

UNESCO conducts capacity building of in-services teachers in Mozambique

Within the context of support to the Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH) on scaling up comprehensive Sexuality Education at the country level and in order to increase children and young people's knowledge on sexual and reproductive health and rights through access to high quality, comprehensive sexuality education, that is gender transformative, evidence informed and age and culturally appropriate, UNESCO conducted capacity building of in-service teachers in Maputo and Sofala Provinces at Institute of Teacher Trainers (IFP) of lnhamízua (27 September-3 October) and Chibututuíne (6 -12 September), respectively.

Dialogues on Eastern and Sothern Africa Ministerial Commitment held in Namibia Dialogues on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) for young people were conducted on the 1st and 3rd September in Zambezi and Kavango regions. These dialogues were part of the series of meetings that are planned for all the regions in Namibia with the aim of orienting regional management teams on the Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) commitment.

Sexuality education highlighted in the Minsk Declaration on the life course approach in the context of health 2020

Member States of the European Region recently gathered in Minsk, Belarus, for the WHO European Regional Conference on the Life-course Approach in the Context of Health 2020. The aim of the conference was to bring together new evidence on what governments can do to keep people healthy throughout the life course and equip policy-makers for promoting a healthy start to life and for targeting the needs of people at critical ages.

For millions of young people who use drugs from Asia and the Pacific, services that could improve their health, encourage recovery and bring about a better quality of life are often denied. Stigma, discriminatory laws and policies prevent many of them from accessing the benefits of harm reduction programmes.
