This paper aims to assess whether the goals of the in-school programmes on prevention of HIV and AIDS that are taught in primary schools of 15 national ministries of education in Southern and Eastern Africa have been reached equitably between boys and girls by the end of primary education. One feature of most of these ministries is that they are in countries that are the hardest hit by a general HIV epidemic. This assessment is based on an institution-based cross-sectional survey conducted with the main objective of assessing the current status of HIV/AIDS and gender responses of higher education institutions in Ethiopia. Eighteen public and four private HEIs located in nine regions of the country were covered by the study. The study was conducted between October and November 2011. The purpose of this Women's Workshop Curriculum is to support a truly sustainable HIV response in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region, centered on positive leadership, women's leadership, prevention, education, and mentorship, as well as gender equity and sensitivity. It is the first curriculum of its kind to be implemented by and for women living with HIV in the MENA Region and thus marks a shift in power from people living with HIV (PLHIV) as beneficiaries, imparters of testimonies, and workshop participants to experts taking a more active role in the response to HIV. …
