  2. Scrutinize campaign: a youth HIV prevention campaign addressing multiple and concurrent partnerships

    Launched on South African television in June 2008, the Scrutinize Campaign was a year-long series of HIV prevention ads targeting multiple and concurrent sexual partnerships. Irreverent and humorous, with strong, colorful visuals, the campaign's ads were markedly different from previous South African HIV prevention campaigns for youth. Rather than telling the audience what to do, the Scrutinize campaign messaging encouraged those in the audience to scrutinize their own behavior, resulting in dramatic uptake of key HIV prevention messages.

  3. National plan of action for scaling up SRH and HIV prevention initiatives for young people

    This plan provides a framework for improving the sexual reproductive health of young people, and protecting them from HIV. The plan consists of five sections: background, policy and programming, goals and guiding principles, institutional framework and monitoring and evaluation. A detailed list of likely activities and budgets is proposed.     The Young Empowered and Healthy (Y.E.A.H) Initiative is a multi-channel communication campaign by and for young people that combines mass media, person-to-person dialogue, and community media. The mission of Y.E.A.H is to stimulate dialogue and action among communities, families, schools, and health institutions; and model positive practices through local and national media. Y.E.A.H is designed to contribute to a reduction in the incidence of HIV and early pregnancy and to contribute to an increase in the proportion of young people that complete primary education and beyond. …

  5. It works! Communication for HIV prevention and social change in adolescents: a mid-term review

    Straight Talk Foundation (STF) has worked for 15 years to better the lives of Ugandan adolescents. Its focus has been HIV prevention and improved adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH). STF's approach builds on the voices and stories of young people, parents, teachers and health workers to create "conversations" and generate solutions. STF works through three channels: radio, print and face-to-face communication. In 2005, STF drew up a five year Strategic Plan (SP) for 2006-2010. …

    This study is an article extracted from "Studies in Family Planning" published in December 2008. It examines young people's sexual partnerships in rural KwazuluNatal, South Africa, focusing attention on key aspects of relationship dynamics, including number of partners, age asymmetries, and duration and frequency of contact, using both survey and qualitative data. Using household survey and qualitative data, the study foud that one-third of the men surveyed reported multiple and/or concurrent partnering, and one-fourth of the women had partners who were five years older than they were. …
