    This is the final report of a Regional Seminar on Education and AIDS in Educational Systems for French-Speaking countries in Africa that was convened in Dakar, Senegal, from 21-25 April 1997. The meeting was concerned with mobilising educational systems in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Youth before the first sexual intercourse were identified as a priority target for preventive education at school. The report is expected to guide in the formulation of action and follow-up plans that can quickly be implemented in the various countries.

    This report of the UNESCO Regional Seminar on HIV/AIDS and Education within the School System for English-speaking Countries in Eastern and Southern Africa is intended for planners and policy-makers in Ministries of Education and Ministries of Health as well as representatives of NGOs. The particular focus is on Eastern and Southern Africa. The purpose of the Seminar was to enhance awareness of the need for preventive education on HIV/AIDS and to mobilise support for effective preventive education as means to reduce actual and potential impact of HIV/AIDS on education systems.
