Element Maroon heritage of Moore Town (Jamaica)
Inscribed in 2008 (3.COM) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (originally proclaimed in 2003)
Title EN: The Maroons are descendants of runaway slaves who established free settlements in eastern Jamaica in the seventeenth century. There, they developed distinct social and religious expressions incorporating various spiritual traditions, among them a collective procession accompanied by drumbeat and the calling sound of the side-blown abeng horn.
Title FR: Les Marrons sont les descendants d’esclaves fugitifs à l’origine des communautés indépendantes de l’est de la Jamaïque au XVIIe siècle. Ils ont développé des expressions sociales et religieuses assimilant plusieurs traditions spirituelles, notamment une procession collective rythmée par le battement de tambours et le son de l’Abeng, une corne traversière.
Title ES: Los cimarrones descienden de esclavos fugitivos que establecieron poblados libres en el este de Jamaica en el siglo XVII, creando allí varias formas de expresión social y religiosa, síntesis de tradiciones espirituales distintas, como esta procesión colectiva que se acompaña del redoblar de percusiones y del reclamo del abeng, un cuerno de soplado lateral.
