UNESCO Creative Cities of Literature Celebrated World Poetry Day
On March 21 2019, in the occasion of World Poetry Day, 15 UNESCO Cities of Literature across the globe were linking up to hold simultaneous events in their respective cities. For instance, around 60 poets who live in Granada and possess different aesthetic approaches, offered a public poetry reading in 25 bookshops around the city.
Granada, Baghdad, Barcelona, Bucheon, Heidelberg, Krakow, Ljublana, Lviv, Milan, Norwich, Nottingham, Óbidos, Reykjavík, Tartu and Ulyanovsk – all celebrated poets and poetry as one of humanity’s most treasured forms of cultural and linguistic expression. By celebrating World Poetry Day, UNESCO Creative Cities of Literature aimed to foster the tradition of public poetry readings, engage the public with cultural experiences, enhance the profile and support bookshops in their role as literary meeting spaces, promoted their writers and particularly young and emerging ones.
