    The authors analyzed the reasons behind first sex, cases of regret, and the association between reasons and regret. They provided a questionnaire to 8,495 high school students ages 14–18 years residing in the Philippines, El Salvador, and Peru. Sexually active participants were asked what circumstances led them to become involved in their first sexual relationship. They also were asked whether they regretted having already had sexual relationships. …

  7. The Role of Nonformal Education in Combating the HIV Epidemic in the Philippines and Taiwan

    This study compares the approaches of Taiwan and the Philippines in mitigating their HIV epidemics using non-formal educational programs. The Philippines has an HIV prevalence of 6,000-11,000 cases out of a population of 91 million. Their approach was to target female sex workers and their managers, before expanding to men in the community, and relying heavily on NGOs to provide sex education. Taiwan was a prevalence of 40,000 cases out of a 23 million person population. …

  8. Human Rights Protections for Sexual Minorities in Insular Southeast Asia: Issues and Implications for Effective HIV Prevention

    This desk review examines the human rights situation for sexual minorities in six countries in insular Southeast Asia, namely Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Timor-Leste. It considers domestic laws and practices, as well as the international human rights instruments and obligations that each country is signatory. It concludes with recommendations to improve the rights framework in the sub-region so that HIV prevention and health programmes can be more accessible and responsive to the needs of sexual minorities.

    This Six Cities Scanning Initiative Implementation Guide describes the methodology for inquiry and analysis used in a Six Cities Scanning Initiative undertaken by UNDP in the Asia Pacific region in 2010.     This document is an outcome of a process to establish a regional framework defining the key elements of a comprehensive response to HIV among MSM and transgender persons (TGs) in the Asia Pacific Region. Along with UNDP and USAID, this regional process has been supported by WHO, UNESCO, UNAIDS, the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), Asia Pacific Coalition on Male Sexual Health (APCOM) and Family Health International.
