Description:
Reality Counts. Focusing on Sexuality and Rights in the Fight against HIV/AIDS is the third in a series of publications presented by the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU) in 2004, in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), held in Cairo in 1994. This book consists of a collection of articles about HIV/AIDS around the world. It connects what was adopted at the ICPD to the UN Millennium Development Goal of halting the spread of HIV/AIDS, and shows that it is essential to embrace sexual and reproductive health and rights for its achievement. The book mixes reflections and accounts of personal experiences with political analyses of the debate surrounding HIV/AIDS. The document contains 24 short articles: 1) Let's talk about sexuality, 2) Fighting HIV in a country in ruins, 3) Has the World Bank made Africa sick? , 4) Broken promises - where is the money? ; 5) It used to be cool not to care, 6) Face the fact - people are doing it, 7) Stop lying about condoms, 8) Get the drugs out, 9) Political arguments, 10) Charlene Smith on rape survivors right to treatment, 11) Gays know more, 12) Carin Jämtin, the Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation, on sexual rights and HIV. 13) Young people want to know about sex, 14) Mary Phiri Tembo on the importance of taking youth organizations serious, 15) Hiding behind medicines, 16) Mitchell Warren on making female condom a success, 17) HIV-positive from war - who cares? , 18) Kate Holt on UN double standards and sexual exploitation, 19) Drugs renew life for those who get the treatment, 20) Microbicides are coming your way, 21) Olle Wängborg on shortage of condoms, 22) Ten years on - still hard to put policies into action, and 23) A world of orphans - know-how is dying out.
