Organizada por los estudiantes y profesores de la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Dacca y abierta a la participación del público en general, la fiesta llamada “Mangal Shobhajatra” es un evento que tiene lugar el 14 de abril para celebrar el “Pahela Baishakh” (día de Año Nuevo). La instauración de esta festividad se remonta al año 1989, cuando los estudiantes, frustrados por el régimen militar imperante, quisieron infundir a la comunidad la esperanza de un futuro mejor. Un mes antes del evento, los miembros de la facultad preparan carrozas y confeccionan máscaras que, según se supone, deben ahuyentar a las potencias del mal para abrir paso al progreso. Por lo menos uno de los artefactos fabricados para el evento representa el mal, otro la fuerza y un tercero la paz. También se producen otros objetos –en particular, pinturas sobre el patrimonio cultural bangladesí–para venderlos el día de la fiesta y obtener así recursos para financiarla. La “Mangal Shobhajatra” simboliza el orgullo que sienten los bangladesíes por su patrimonio cultural vivo, la fortaleza y el coraje que les animan para luchar contra las fuerzas tenebrosas, y también su reivindicación de la verdad y la justicia. Al agrupar a toda clase de personas, sin distinción de edad, sexo, casta, religión y pensamiento, este evento cultural fomenta valores compartidos por la comunidad, como la solidaridad y la democracia. Son el estudiantado y el cuerpo docente de la comunidad universitaria quienes transmiten las prácticas y conocimientos relacionados con esta festividad.
