Finances
The preservation of the authenticity of the Memorial and its daily presentation to visitors from all over the world require funding which exceeds the capabilities of our Museum. For this reason, in addition to our revenue and grants from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, external funds derived from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation and the European Union are of vital importance.
In 2018, special purpose funds from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in the amount of € 0.3 million were allocated to fire protection of historical buildings on the premises of the Memorial, purchase of the Eiss Archive collection of documents, implementation of the project related to the organisation of a New Main Exhibition, as well as the educational projects “Through a common history towards the future” and “75 years after
Operation Reinhardt—the contemporary memory ofthe extermination of Polish Jews”.
Funds from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation in the amount of € 1.2 million were earmarked to the implementation of preservation works in 2018, which focused on the area of the former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp.
The EU, within the framework of the European Regional Development Fund and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage are co-financing the project for the “Adaptation of the building, the so-called Old Theatre for the activities of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim”. The project implementation in 2018 was financed to the amount of € 1.4 million with funds from the EU and € 0.6 million from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
The Auschwitz-Birkenau Victims Memorial Foundation directly supported the substantive activities of the museum departments such as Education, the Digital Repository, Archives, Exhibitions, Methodology of Guiding, the Publishing House to the amount of € 0.2 million, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands finances the implementation of the Polish-Dutch educational project. In 2018, the support mounted to € 0.1 million.
In 2018, Volkswagen AG & the International Auschwitz Committee allocated € 0.1 million for the analysis of documents at the International Tracing Services Bad Arolsen, whereas Stiftung Bayerische Gedenkstädte from Munich contributed € 31 thousand in 2018 for research on the fate of Polish political prisoners fromAuschwitz in the camp complexes in Dachau and Flossenbürg.
The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and Memorial imposes an obligation of remembrance and education on future generations throughout the world.
