New report to be launched at UNESCO General Conference in Paris on 13 November

The need for accurate, timely and comparable data on education has never been more urgent, with the prospects of reaching Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) –  a quality education for all by 2030 – far from certain according to recent projections.

The global and thematic indicators for SDG 4 are intended to provide countries with the information they need to better direct their education policies and funding while monitoring progress and potential setbacks internationally.  Yet today, many countries struggle to produce – let alone make good use of – the data that are required.

Tools to help countries produce and use SDG 4 data

The UIS flagship publication, the SDG 4 Data Digest, is designed to help countries overcome the measurement challenge. This year’s report presents the latest methodological developments in the global and thematic indicators while helping countries produce the national data needed for monitoring and policymaking purposes. While shedding light on ways to improve the availability of data, the Digest also highlights regional initiatives to monitor progress towards SDG 4.

The new report will be launched during the UNESCO General Conference for Member States in Paris, during a joint event on 13 November organized in collaboration with the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report.

The event will open with a presentation of the key findings of the Digest. Discussions will then turn to the work of the GEM Report in compiling new Education Profiles of national policies and legislation on inclusive education, which will be part of a new online portal offering comparative qualitative data.

Ministers of Education and education policy makers will join UNESCO’s Assistant-Director General for Education in a candid discussion. They will share their experiences producing and using education data, and maximising peer learning on effective policy solutions to deliver a quality, inclusive education for all.
