We live in a digital age where, for many of us, all the information we need is just a click away. In Burundi, as in the rest of the world, young people are often the most active users of information communication technology (ICT). Frontline AIDS saw an opportunity to use ICT to provide adolescents with both SRHR information and safe spaces to engage with their peers and experts. Whilst ‘ICT for health’ is a frequent topic among HIV and SRHR organisations in Burundi, using ICT to improve access to youth-friendly and comprehensive HIV and SRHR information was something new.

Background: As teenagers have easy access to both radio programs and cell phones, the current study used these tools so that young people could anonymously identify questions about sex and other related concerns in the urban environment of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The purpose of this healthcare intervention was to identify and address concerns raised by young people, which are related to sexual health, and which promote youth health. This is a study of the association of radio and television exposure with different aspects of reproductive behavior and with knowledge, attitudes, and behavior in connection with HIV/AIDS. The measures of mass media are limited to the frequency that women and men report listening to the radio and watching television, which are standard questions in the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). Only the frequency is assessed; the DHS does not obtain information on programmatic content. …
Context: An entertainment-education radio soap opera, Apwe Plezi, was broadcast from February 1996 to September 1998 in St. Lucia. The program promoted family planning, HIV prevention and other social development themes. Methods: The program's effects were assessed through analyses of data from nationally representative pretest and posttest surveys, focus-group discussions and other qualitative and quantitative sources. Results: Among 1,238 respondents to the posttest survey, 35% had listened to Apwe Plezi, including 12% who listened at least once per week. …

Straight Talk Foundation (STF) has worked for 15 years to better the lives of Ugandan adolescents. Its focus has been HIV prevention and improved adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH). STF's approach builds on the voices and stories of young people, parents, teachers and health workers to create "conversations" and generate solutions. STF works through three channels: radio, print and face-to-face communication. In 2005, STF drew up a five year Strategic Plan (SP) for 2006-2010. …
The discourse on the relationship between literacy and HIV is dominated by the belief that illiteracy is one of the causes of HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, the gender disparity in literacy rates means that women illiterates belong to the high risk groups. Comparing the literacy rate of the ten countries with double digit HIV prevalence rates seems to disprove this hypothesis as seven of these countries have estimated literacy rates of at least 79%. …
