The City of Hamburg Joins the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities

The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) is proud to announce that the City of Hamburg is now a member of the network.

With its rich history in local and international trade, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is steeped in economic prosperity and cultural diversity. Being the second-largest city in Germany, it has made concerted efforts over the past few decades towards promoting lifelong learning by implementing initiatives that are founded on its vision of “learning sustainability”. The city’s commitment to the promotion of lifelong learning is evident in its considerable investment in policies such as the ‘Hamburg Masterplan ESD 2030’. This plan aims to implement Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) initiatives in all sectors of education, including school education and vocational training, and research with an emphasis on leaving no one behind.

With its motto “Hamburg learns sustainability”, the city boasts a keen interest in fostering renewable energies, climate protection and sustainable mobility, among other areas. And just like its over 2,000 iconic bridges, which connect communities to the various economic and social opportunities available, the learning city of Hamburg is successfully engaged in harnessing the power of ESD and lifelong learning to connect its people to a better city – a habitat which is clean, green and sustainable.
