Since 2018, UNESCO has been working with national stakeholders involved in safeguarding living heritage in Lebanon for the effective implementation of the 2003 Convention at the national level, with the support of the Japan Funds-in-Trust.

The project “Strengthening capacities for the effective implementation of the 2003 Convention of the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Lebanon” aims to provide technical support for strengthening human capacities for the implementation of the Convention and create a national network of trainers. The project focuses on community-based inventorying, the elaboration of safeguarding plans, and the use of the Convention’s international cooperation mechanisms that can support further safeguarding of living heritage in Lebanon.

From 24 June -5 July 2019, the UNESCO Office in Beirut implemented one of the components of the project, a training on community-based inventorying, which brought together thirty participants from NGOs, municipalities, and universities. The training aimed to strengthen capacities and develop skills to design a community tailored approach to identify and inventory intangible cultural heritage in the country. Participants also had the opportunity to undertake a field practicum to inventory the traditional ‘dabkeh’ dance, which represents an important part of the living heritage of communities in Lebanon.
