  1. Séminaire régional sur l'éducation et le SIDA dans le système scolaire (Afrique francophone), Dakar, 21-25 avril 1997 : rapport final

    This is the final report of a Regional Seminar on Education and AIDS in Educational Systems for French-Speaking countries in Africa that was convened in Dakar, Senegal, from 21-25 April 1997. The meeting was concerned with mobilising educational systems in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Youth before the first sexual intercourse were identified as a priority target for preventive education at school. The report is expected to guide in the formulation of action and follow-up plans that can quickly be implemented in the various countries.

    The lessons and teaching materials contained in this family life education package have been selected from various existing materials. They are designed to help young people in their physical, social, emotional and moral development in preparation for adulthood. The conceptual framework divides topics into seven areas: family; types of functions; family roles/relationship and responsibility; family life cycle; family resources; marriage; and responsible parenthood/family planning.

    This handbook for students is the last in a series of three documents designed for educational planners, teachers and students on school health education and the prevention of HIV/AIDS and STDs. It includes some fifty-three student learning activities on prevention of HIV/AIDS and STDs. The activities are divided into four units: 1) basic knowledge on HIV/AIDS and STDs; 2) abstinence and postponement of first sexual contact; 3) practicing safer sex; and 4) counselling and support.

Based on a participative methodology, this handbook discusses the main steps in curriculum planning. It also covers aspects of teacher training.

    This report of the UNESCO Regional Seminar on HIV/AIDS and Education within the School System for English-speaking Countries in Eastern and Southern Africa is intended for planners and policy-makers in Ministries of Education and Ministries of Health as well as representatives of NGOs. The particular focus is on Eastern and Southern Africa. The purpose of the Seminar was to enhance awareness of the need for preventive education on HIV/AIDS and to mobilise support for effective preventive education as means to reduce actual and potential impact of HIV/AIDS on education systems.
