This International Expert Workshop will create a tailored action plan and timetable to ensure World Heritage can make an impactful contribution to shaping the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. The results are expected to inform the processes under both the UNESCO World Heritage Convention and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). This will also relate to processes involved in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Jointly organised by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) with its International Academy for Nature Conservation and the IUCN World Heritage Programme, it is funded by the German Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
The workshop's aims are:
- World Heritage – specific targets and indicators will be developed in support of the Biodiversity Framework including but not limited to the post-Aichi CBD Targets.
- A World Heritage roadmap – specific milestones and events will be identified to promote World Heritage specific inputs leading to the 2020 UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP 15) while also taking advantage of key calendar events for World Heritage and IUCN.
- A World Heritage messaging strategy – How World Heritage can meaningfully contribute to the 2050 UN vision? How can World Heritage, being the only international instrument that includes nature and culture with a broader mandate, advance our thinking?
By supporting this workshop, BfN continues its work on fostering an integrated consideration of natural and cultural heritage under the World Heritage Convention. It also demonstrates its long-standing support to and partnership with IUCN, and the Advisory Bodies’ processes within the World Heritage Convention.
