The International Co-ordinating Council of the Man and Biosphere (MAB) programme designated new biosphere reserves during its 30th session on 23-28 July 2018 in Palembang, Indonesia.
Biosphere Reserves are sites of recognized importance for conservation of biological and cultural diversity. Moreover, they are learning areas for sustainable development under diverse ecological, social and economic contexts. Through the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, they exchange best practices and knowledge, cooperate on scientific research and develop solutions for sustainable development. Biosphere Reserves aim to foster positive social transformations and to work as instruments of practical implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals through a voluntary engagement approach.
