La Surova, fiesta popular de la región de Pernik

La festividad popular de la Surova tiene lugar en la región de Pernik los días 13 y 14 de enero para celebrar el Año Nuevo, con arreglo al antiguo calendario. Esta fiesta consiste esencialmente en la celebración de una mascarada popular en los pueblos de la región. La primera noche del festejo, los survakari –comparsas de hombres, mujeres y niños– revisten máscaras y disfraces especialmente preparados para esta ocasión y acuden al centro del pueblo para encender hogueras y divertirse con el público presente. Algunos participantes representan determinados personajes: el jefe, el sacerdote, el oso o la pareja de recién casados. Al día siguiente, pronto por la mañana, las comparsas se agrupan y recorren todo el pueblo, visitando a las familias en sus hogares, para que el sacerdote “case” a las parejas jóvenes y el oso desee buena salud a todos con empujones. Las familias esperan la llegada de los survakari para darles la acogida con refrigerios y regalos. Después del desfile por el pueblo, los comparsas distribuyen los regalos y ofrecen el dinero colectado a los huérfanos y personas pobres. Esta mascarada popular atrae a los jóvenes y refuerza su autoestima como continuadores de la tradición festiva de sus comunidades. Familias enteras de los pueblos se dedican durante todo el año a reunir los materiales necesarios para confeccionar las máscaras y otros elementos de la fiesta. Los adultos enseñan a los jóvenes y los niños a hacer máscaras y disfraces.
