Directions to UIL

The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) is located directly behind the Museum für Völkerkunde (Museum of Ethnology) in Hamburg’s Rotherbaum area, which is west of the Alster lake.

From the airport

A taxi from the airport to Feldbrunnenstrasse costs about €20.

If you wish to use public transport, please first buy a ticket at one of the transport authority’s (HVV) ticket machines. Then take the S1 train in the direction of Blankenese or Wedel. Get off at Ohlsdorf station and transfer to the U1 train going in the direction of Ohlstedt. Get off at the Hallerstrasse stop and exit the station, following the directions to the Museum für Völkerkunde. Walk down Rothenbaumchaussee towards the museum, walk past the museum and turn left into Binderstrasse. Walk one block and turn left into Feldbrunnenstrasse. You will see the UIL gate on the opposite corner. In total, it takes about five minutes to walk from the Hallerstrasse station to UIL.

There is also a shuttle bus that goes to Hauptbahnhof (Hamburg’s central train station). From there, you can take the U1 underground train to Hallerstrasse.

By train

If you take a regional or national train to Hamburg that goes all the way to Hamburg-Altona, please get off at the Dammtor stop. Then walk up Rothenbaumchaussee for around ten minutes before turning right into Binderstrasse, which is just before the Museum für Völkerkunde. Then walk one block before turning left into Feldbrunnenstrasse. You will see UIL on the opposite corner.

If you take the U1 underground train from Hauptbahnhof (Hamburg’s central train station), get off at the Hallerstrasse stop and exit the station, following the directions to the Museum für Völkerkunde. Walk down Rothenbaumchaussee to the museum, walk past the museum and turn left into Binderstrasse. Walk one block and turn left into Feldbrunnenstrasse. You will see the UIL gate on the opposite corner. In total, it takes about five minutes to walk from the Hallerstrasse station to UIL.

By car

After leaving the A7 autobahn at the Bahrenfeld exit, follow signs to the centre of the city (Zentrum), then turn left into Holstenkamp and continue on Fruchtallee and Schäferkampsallee. Turn left into Beim Schlump and continue on Hallerstrasse until it ends. Turn right into Rothenbaumchaussee and at the next light, turn left into Turmweg. At the end of Turmweg, turn right into Feldbrunnenstrasse, which is a one-way street.
