La Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas elige una serie de “Días Internacionales” para marcar aspectos importantes de la vida humana y de la historia (La lista completa de todos los días celebrados por las Naciones Unidas y sus organismos especializados está disponible aquí: Días Internacionales).
Las agencias especializadas de las Naciones Unidas, incluyendo la UNESCO, pueden también proclamar Días Internacionales. En este caso, la proclamación de los días internacionales depende sólo de sus órganos de gobierno y regulaciones internas.
De este modo, la UNESCO celebra los Días Internacionales de la ONU relacionados con sus campos de competencia, y además, otros Días Internacionales proclamados por los órganos de gobierno de la Organización u otras instituciones.
