Piloting family learning in Mozambique

The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) is working with Mozambique’s National Adult Literacy and Education Department on the development of a pedagogical model to pilot a family learning project in Mozambique. The project, which is part of the Malala Initiative – a fund for girls’ right to education launched last year by UNESCO and the Government of Pakistan, and which will be piloted in four districts in Maputo and Nampula provinces, takes an intergenerational approach to learning. Its chief objective is to enhance the literacy skills of both parents and children by fostering a culture of learning in economically disadvantaged families.

At a workshop held in Maputo at the beginning of November 2015, participants from the selected pilot districts, together with Mozambique’s National Adult Literacy and Education Department (DINAEA) and the UNESCO Maputo Office discussed the pedagogical model of the planned family learning project.

Mozambique’s adult literacy and education strategy for 2016 to 2019

As well as providing support to improve family learning in Mozambique, UIL is working with the DINAEA to jump-start the process of updating the national Adult Literacy and Education Strategy and its operational plan for the period 2016 – 2019. For this purpose a national workshop was organized by DINAEA and the UNESCO Maputo office to discuss the strategic priorities for the sub-sector, which will be the basis for a first draft strategy that will be presented for validation in 2016 and which will feed into the national Education Sector Plan for the same period.
