From August 26, ICCROM will organize a series of seminars during which restorers and experts from the Kizhi Museum will be on hand to share their unique know-how.


In cooperation with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, ICCROM is offering an intensive three-week workshop to be held at Petrozavodsk State University on an island in the Kizhi archipelago of Lake Onega, Russia. The objective: preparing participants for the practice of preserving wooden architectural monuments in their respective countries.

On the cutting edge between theory and practice
This programme is based on an innovative methodology combining theoretical sessions - 144 hours (4 ECTS credits) of training - and field trips. Thus, the many conferences and workshops related to the monitoring, conservation and restoration of wooden architecture will be complemented by a visit to the monuments of Karelia and the presentation of a unique restoration project for the Church of the Transfiguration.

At the end of the course a certificate of completion called "Conservation and restoration of wooden architecture" issued by ICCROM as well as a certificate of additional professional training "Research and preservation of wooden architecture" will be delivered. However, to obtain these diplomas, participants must assiduously attend all the courses offered, make a 15-minute presentation on their professional activities and obtain a satisfactory mark in the final written test that will close the programme.

A training course for motivated and competent participants
This programme, run by Russian experts from the Kizhi Museum, is aimed primarily at professionals in the field of conservation and architectural restoration of wood with practical experience. Thus, specialized training is desirable and an advanced level of English is a must.

The budget: registration fees and a cost of living to be considered.
This exceptional training costs 36,000 rubles, or about 500 euros. An amount that do not include subsistence and accommodation expenses for the training period, nor round trip travel expenses for Petrozavodsk. An additional 36,000 rubles is therefore required to cover these additional costs. Part of these expenses can be covered by grants issued by ICCROM under certain conditions. However, these subsidies are granted in limited numbers.
