2. Justification of pre-selection

What are the main reasons for having pre-selected this project proposal, as compared to other proposals received by the National Commission for UNESCO?:

Culture and Cultural Industries has been identified as a key component in the long term growth and development of Antigua and Barbuda, a small island developing state. The main economic industry is tourism under which culture plays a crucial role and a deeper understanding of this industry can be asserted by having accurate data framing. To this end it is essential that we improve the collection, interpretation and presentation of cultural statistics and data. This will enable the cultural division and affiliated government departments to implement, monitor and develop cultural policies as well as management of the industry. Cultural industries has been one of the avenues that help create sustainable livelihoods whilst directly assisting with economic benefits to the local community in addition to supporting mechanisms which foster creativity in the cultural environment.

This application is being sent directly from the policy advisors and senior government officials of the Ministry of Culture and cultural division in Antigua and Barbuda.

4. Relevance of the pre-selected project proposal

4.1. What are the main current needs and priorities in your country in terms of cultural policies and/or cultural industries?:

While our cultural policy is currently being drafted and presented, there is a clear need for the increase and availability of data and statistics regarding the economic contribution of cultural industries in national development. This will ensure greater participation of all sectors including the vulnerable and marginalized groups, youth and women.

4.2. How do the objectives of this pre-selected project proposal meet the current needs and priorities of the country in terms of cultural policies and/or cultural industries?:

With the presentation of factual statistics as it relates to the economic contributions, as well as facilitating easier access to data sharing relating to cultural industries, more persons would be enlightened and seek greater involvement.

4.3. To what extent do you expect this pre-selected project proposal to have an impact on the country’s cultural policies and/or cultural industries?:

The project is designed to reach all aspects of society and cultural industries to involve the various media outreach programs. The target goal to private sectors as well as cultural practitioners is to not only generate interest but to provide a greater awareness so that the data gathering and access to quality statistical data can be of a broader base and inclusive value for policy makers.

Antigua and Barbuda is a small island developing state with a small population and limited resources and expertise. Only one project is being submitted this year and we are presenting it as it is of National importance.
