UNESCO and Globo TV renew technical cooperation agreement for the Criança Esperança Project

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and the Vice-President of Globo Publishing Group João Roberto Marinho signed today (18) in Paris the renewal of the technical cooperation and partnership agreement for the Criança Esperança project for the next six years. The ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Organization and was one of the actions marking the UNESCO General Conference, which began on 12 November

Criança Esperança is one of the largest fundraising campaigns in the world. For 34 years, it has been mobilizing Brazilian society to raise funds for investment in social projects developed by civil society organizations (CSOs) across the country. The campaign has been supported by UNESCO since 2004. With this renewal, the UNESCO Office in Brazil will continue to be responsible for the management of the funds raised by the campaign, as well as for the projects’ selection and monitoring.

“UNESCO is very proud to be a partner of TV Globo through Criança Esperança, which we hope will continue to produce excellent results, contributing to reduce inequalities, promote social inclusion and leave no one behind”, said Audrey Azoulay. “We thank Globo for helping UNESCO to advocate its principles and values, such as quality of education, gender equality and social inclusion”, she added.

“We have a historic commitment to social issues, and we find at UNESCO the solidity for a strong social impact partnership, which renews every year our wish to be a brand that is recognized for its goals,” said João Roberto Marinho.

Recognized by UNESCO as an international model, Criança Esperança has the fundamental role of discussing important themes of the social agenda, encouraging the debates on public policies. The programme contributed to the inclusion of the Article 227 in the 1988 Brazilian Federal Constitution, which guarantees the rights of Brazilian children. Two years later, this Article gave rise to the Child and Adolescent Statute. The projects benefited by the Criança Esperança Programme promote the development of people and organizations, in response to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

“We are happy to renew our partnership with Globo TV, and together continuing to promote education, and social inclusion, as well as the empowerment of children, adolescents and young people. In addition to bringing development opportunities to all regions of Brazil, Criança Esperança promotes a chain of solidarity that contributes to creating opportunities and transforming lives, building a fairer and more inclusive society for all, enabling us to work towards our goal of not leaving anyone behind,” highlighted the Director and Representative of UNESCO in Brazil Marlova Jovchelovitch Noleto.

The partnership between UNESCO and Globo TV for the campaign contributes to the promotion of the human and social development of children, adolescents and young people. In 2019, Criança Esperança had a historical fund-raising record of over R$ 22.7 million (reais). The funds will support 91 social projects in the areas of education, culture, sports, youth, and inclusion. These projects have been developed in 23 states, which directly benefit more than 66,000 vulnerable children, adolescents and youth.

About Criança Esperança

Criança Esperança has created opportunities of development for children, adolescentes and youth in Brazil for the past 34 years. To date, more than R$ 390 million (reais) in donations have been invested in Brazil in more than 5,000 social projects, benefiting more than four million children, adolescents and young men and women across the country. Donations can be made all year round through the Criança Esperança website (www.criancaesperanca.com.br). The funds raised are deposited directly into UNESCO’s account, which is responsible for the projects’ selection by means of a public call for proposals held annually. The Organization is also responsible for the technical and financial monitoring of the supported institutions who run the selected projects. Criança Esperança is a campaign of millions of Brazilians, in partnership with Globo TV and UNESCO.
