UNESCO Category 2 Regional Centre for ICT in Manama Agreement Renewed

Dr Majed al-Nuaimi, Minister of Education of the Kingdom of Bahrain and Mr Moez Chakchouk, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information signed the Renewal Agreement for the Category 2 Regional Centre for Information and Communication Technology (RCICT)’ on Saturday 16 November 2019 at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris.

This Renewal Agreement builds on the 2008 Agreement, which established the RCICT. It aims to support activities in the area of ICT and Education, including through the development of multi-stakeholder partnerships to all  for the exchange of information on developing trends in areas such as AI, Internet of Things, Blockchain, Cloud Coming and Coding, as well as the exchange of experience and best practice for teacher training in the use of ICTs.

The RCICT activities cover the six Member States of the cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC), namely the Kingdom of Bahrain, State of Kuwait, Sultante of Oman, State of Qatar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
The Renewal Agreement comes further to the recommendations of the evaluation of the Centre carried out in May 2019 by UNESCO, in accordance with the Integrated Comprehensive Strategy for category 2 institutes and centres under the auspices of UNESCO as approved by 37 C/Resolution 93.    

Prior to the signature of the Renewal Agreement, Dr Majed al-Nuaimi, Minister of Education of Bahrain and Mr Moez Chakchouk, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information met to discuss a concrete action plan to continue the important work of the RCICT. Highlighted in this action plan were initiatives related to contextualization of the ICT Competency Framework for Teachers Version 3, Open Educational Resources, Youth Mobile Coding activities as well as AI and Education.

The implementation of activities of the Renewal Agreement will form part of UNESCO’s efforts to respond to the need to provide digital skills in education and training systems along with core competences, new mindsets and attitudes that build up a society’s capabilities to innovate.
