UNESCO through its Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe expresses solidarity with #Venice and its people, in the face of their grave losses.
As Venice is suffering its worst flooding in the last 50 years, with on last Tuesday a peak of 187cm - only 7cm lower than the level reached in #1966, today the city braced for another day of #hightide, flooding some of the city's most iconic historic sites - including St. Mark's Basilica already heavily damaged.
UNESCO and particularly its Regional Bureau continue to stand ready to assist the authorities as they strive to overcome such devastating events, preserve the rich cultural and natural history of #Veniceanditslagoon, as well as promote a sustainable development of the site in the age of climate change.
UNESCO also offers its support to #Italy mobilized to confront other flooding emergencies affecting its territory, notably in its World Heritage site “Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of #Matera” in the southern region of Basilicata.
As noted at the UNESCO General Conference by António Guterres UN Secretary-General, UNESCO sites represent a unique platform to address the challenges of #climatechange. UNESCO works closely with Italy and its other Member States to ensure that its network of sites contribute to this crucial endeavour.

Venezia sta subendo la peggiore #alluvione degli ultimi 50 anni, con un picco di 187 cm raggiunti martedì scorso - solo 7 cm più in basso rispetto al livello raggiunto nel #1966, oggi la città si è preparata ad un altro giorno di alta marea, che ha allagato alcuni dei più iconici #siti storici - tra cui la #BasilicadiSanMarco già gravemente danneggiata.
L'UNESCO e in particolare il suo Ufficio Regionale rinnovano il loro continuo impegno ad assistere le autorità nel tentativo di superare eventi così devastanti, preservare la ricca storia culturale e naturale di #Veneziaelasualaguna, nonché promuovere uno sviluppo sostenibile del sito in questi tempi di #cambiamentoclimatico.
L'UNESCO offre anche il suo sostegno all'#Italia, ora mobilitata per affrontare emergenze alluvionali che colpiscono il suo territorio, in particolare il sito Patrimonio dell'Umanità "Sassi e il Parco delle Chiese Rupestri di #Matera" nella regione meridionale della Basilicata.
Come osservato alla Conferenza generale dell'UNESCO dal Segretario Generale delle Nazioni Unite, António Guterres, i siti UNESCO rappresentano una piattaforma unica per affrontare le sfide del cambiamento climatico. L'UNESCO lavora a stretto contatto con l'Italia e gli altri Stati membri per garantire che la sua rete di siti contribuisca a quest’impegno cruciale.
