Dates: 12-22 November 2019, Venue: UNESCO Headquarters, Paris
Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and UNESCO’s global vision on literacy – new competencies needed in a digitalized world, taking into account games in different forms, as well as the potential opportunities and challenges posed by the AI. Beyond its conventional concept as a set of reading, writing and counting skills, literacy is now understood as a means of identification, understanding, interpretation, creation, and communication in an increasingly digital, text-mediated, information-rich and fast-changing world. The world faces an exponential rise of disinformation and hate speech. MIL offers fundamental competencies for people to understand and critically engage with information transmitted through all forms of media, including games and AI systems/technologies. This side event will focus on how to improve citizens’ information, media, and technological knowledge, skills, and attitude, through MIL, to respond to opportunities and challenges of the digital era. It will explore MIL in games as well as in the context of UNESCO’s global vision on literacy.
This side event will be organized jointly by UNESCO, the Government of Finland and the Government of India. It will have two components:
I. Ministerial Roundtable, 14 November, Room XII
II. Games Bar, 12-22 November, Hall Ségur
