This Sex Education Forum guidance is designed to support schools in reviewing and updating their policy on sex and relationships education (SRE). It explains the current requirements for SRE based on legislation and provides a step-by-step process for updating a primary or secondary school SRE policy. The third section explores key issues to be addressed in a SRE policy to help ensure good quality provision.
Globally, adolescents aged 12–15 years are making sexual and reproductive decisions of profound significance for their future, often based on misguided, inadequate or dangerously wrong information. Background: People who identity as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) have specific health needs. Sexual orientation and gender identity are social determinants of health, as homophobia and heteronormativity persist as prejudices in society. LGBT patients often experience discrimination and prejudice in health care settings. While recent South African policies recognise the need for providing LGBT specific health care, no curricula for teaching about LGBT health related issues exist in South African health sciences faculties. …
The National Teacher Preparation Standards for Sexuality Education were created to provide guidance to programs within institutions of higher education in order to better prepare undergraduate pre-service students to deliver sexuality education. This paper reports on a classroom-based mixed-methods research project for the design of an HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum for Swaziland. The aim was through education to transform Swazi worldviews and attitudes toward sexual practices.
