  2. Potential attrition in education: the impact of job satisfaction, morale, workload and HIV/AIDS

  6. Mitigating the Impact of HIV/AIDS on Education Systems in Southern Africa

The gains of Education for All, 1990 2000 (EFA) are being undone by the AIDS pandemic, particularly in Southern Africa. Nevertheless, most countries in the region, as elsewhere, do not yet factor the influence of AIDS into education planning. While attention has been given by many ministries to teaching children about safe sex through the Life Skills curriculum, little has as yet been done to assess the actual and potential damage of AIDS to learning, to the teaching service, and to the education system itself. …

Maintaining and enhancing educational quality in the context of the HIV and AIDS epidemic is particularly difficult because the virus is infecting increasing numbers of teaching and administrative staff in the education sector. The epidemic is also affecting pupils. Many have lost one or both parents, leading to financial strains and erratic attendance. In this context, it is important to track on a regular basis factors affecting educational quality during the school year in order to take corrective and preventive measures. …

  14. Keeping the education system healthy: managing the impact of HIV/AIDS on education in South Africa

HIV/AIDS not only attacks individuals. It also attacks systems. Education systems and life skill programmes must be developed to reverse this trend and loosen AIDS' hold on ESAR. …
