The gains of Education for All, 1990 2000 (EFA) are being undone by the AIDS pandemic, particularly in Southern Africa. Nevertheless, most countries in the region, as elsewhere, do not yet factor the influence of AIDS into education planning. The empirical part of the article is largely based on the initiative of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (henceforth ADEA) on ""Identifying Promising Approaches to HIVAIDS in Education in sub-Saharan Africa"". Cet ouvrage recense les effets de la pandémie sur l'offre et la demande dans l'enseignement primaire et secondaire au Burkina Faso, ainsi que les réponses apportées pour limiter ces effets. Il en ressort avant tout une très forte stigmatisation dans le milieu scolaire. Celle-ci entraine notamment une faible participation des enseignants vivants avec le VIH dans les efforts de prévention, une formation insuffisante des enseignants, ainsi qu'un manque de prise en charge des orphelins et un accès limité aux soins pour les personnes séro positives.

Until recently, HIV/AIDS has been perceived primarily as a health problem, which can be contained by effective health education programmes. But the deadly virus has not been contained and continues to spread so widely that it is now having a profound adverse impact on communities and institutions. In the Eastern and Southern African Region (ESAR), the AIDS epidemic is beginning to have a serious impact on the education sector, specifically on the demand for, supply of, and the management and quality of education provided at all levels. The quality of learning outcomes and education will be affected by several confounding factors which will emerge as the pandemic takes a deeper hold in these countries.
