Research undertaken with UNESCO support by Professor Wilma Bailey and Dr. Affette McCaw-Binns of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, on issues related to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Jamaica and the education system was completed at the end of 2004.Themes investigated were: Barriers to the integration of HIV/AIDS infected/affected children into the Jamaican school system; The HIV epidemic: is it affecting the supply of educators and the demand for education in Jamaica? This study of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the education sector was part of a three country study (Uganda, Malawi and Botswana) and had three broad aims: To assess the strategies being used to educate students about HIV/AIDS in schools; To assess the impact on students as orphans, caregivers and those infected with HIV; To assess the impact on teachers as educators and employees.

The supply and demand for education will be greatly altered over the next 5 - 10 years, challenging the prospects of Education for All. In addition, as more AIDS education is dispursed, the trends will change and HIV/AIDS will become a disease among the poor.
African education programmes are both susceptible and vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. This paper points out the underlying problem of HIV/AIDS in the context of educational development, and also identifies opportunities for remedial action and positive enablement, which is that given the importance of education as a transformative force, there is little doubt the education sectors in these countries can become a site for containment or disaster.
While it has long been suspected that HIV prevalence among educators is high, there has been no scientific study to assess this. Responding to the need for empirical evidence, the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) commissioned the Human Sciences Research Council-led consortium to conduct this nation-wide research assessing the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, as well as issues such as the health status and attrition of our educators. The results of the research suggest that the high number of our educators living with AIDS is cause for serious concern. …

The study described here explores, for three regions with generalized HIV and AIDS epidemics, the impact of the epidemic on teacher supply now and up to 2015, the target date for the achievement of education for all.
