This document describes the impact of HIV/AIDS on education systems. The supply and demand for education will be greatly altered over the next 5 - 10 years, challenging the prospects of Education for All. In addition, as more AIDS education is dispursed, the trends will change and HIV/AIDS will become a disease among the poor.
While it has long been suspected that HIV prevalence among educators is high, there has been no scientific study to assess this. Responding to the need for empirical evidence, the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) commissioned the Human Sciences Research Council-led consortium to conduct this nation-wide research assessing the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, as well as issues such as the health status and attrition of our educators. The results of the research suggest that the high number of our educators living with AIDS is cause for serious concern. …
The education sector is crucial to any national response to the world epidemic of HIV and AIDS. The school age years, about 5 to15 years, make up the cross section of any population with the lowest prevalence of HIV infection. This is the "Window of Hope". Education is the social vaccine against HIV infection. But, with effective anti-viral treatment the number of infected children of school age rises, through increased survival.
