LAB.2030: Creativity for Sustainable Urban Development

When:
Mon, 06/11/2018

Creativity has become key to sustainable urban development and cities have increasingly evolved into living laboratories for development. LAB.2030 spotlights the diverse ways in which Creative Cities are thriving by embracing innovation and culture into their local policies to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Through a collection of case studies that include both local and international initiatives, LAB.2030, seeks to highlight each City's outcomes, share their experiences and stimulate other cities towards a similar direction. Because of culture’s transversal nature, it encompasses concepts such as social and economic inclusion, education and environmental sustainability, making it a crucial lever to achieve this transformative vision. Within this scope, LAB.2030 is built around six main themes where culture has had a concrete and positive impact on sustainable urban development: Cities like Saint Etienne, Ouagadougou, and Changsha are using creativity to explore new paths towards economic development; other Cities like Chengdu, Austin, Paducah, focus their creative fields to encourage the sustainable management of environmental resources; Santos,  Kobe, Durban and Bergen are providing new insights on how creativity stimulates knowledge and boosts employability; Cairo, Tartu and Bogota are working to connect heritage and their local economies to boost new creative approaches around the safeguarding of cultural and natural heritage;  the projects carried out by Sydney, Gabrovo, York, EdinburghChordeleg and Montreal underline that creativity is key in the promotion of social inclusion, gender equality and participatory governance of urban policies; finally, Cities such as Amarante, Bandung and Bologna, are providing new solutions to urban development issues by triggering creativity.
