LAB.2030 | Downtown Cairo: Behind the Revitalization of Cairo’s Forgotten Downtown

LAB.2030 | Downtown Cairo: Behind the Revitalization of Cairo’s Forgotten Downtown

When:
Tue, 06/12/2018

Encouraging development and progress is the empowering theme behind the ‘Downtown Cairo’ project. Although once a vibrant and affluent area, Cairo in recent years has fallen into a state of deterioration. In a united effort, the government, local business, the Ministry of Tourism and local residents have joined forces to implement a variety of changes aimed at rejuvenating and stabilising the area. Making the most out of Cairo’s cultural richness, the project intends to revitalize streets, main squares and looks at creative ways to reinvent the historic buildings. The regeneration of Cairo’s downtown creates new spaces, with its buildings turned into cultural centres that will offer a variety of innovative cultural activities. The goal is to diversify the area’s cultural base by building upon its built heritage, and invite people from all backgrounds to participate in public cultural activities and enhance their sense of belonging. Further changes aim to support social development within the area, making it a safer and an improved space for residents, as well as to encourage further growth in its tourist industry.
