Saikou Jammeh
Journalist and media and freedom of expression rights advocate
Saikou Jammeh is a Gambian journalist and media and freedom of expression rights advocate. He has ten years of professional experience. He worked extensively in the local media industry until the newspaper he edited was shut down by the former government. He became a freelance journalist and a Banjul-based stringer for a number of international news organisations, including The Guardian UK, Inter Press Service and Radio France International. In 2015, Saikou became the Secretary General of the Gambia Press Union (GPU), the umbrella trade union and professional organisation for media professionals in The Gambia. Through this role, he became a prominent voice against the dictatorship that reigned in his country - for twenty-two years – until 2016. Now that his country is undergoing a democratic transition, he is currently implementing multiple projects and campaigns on media sectors reforms, including legal and policy reforms, capacity building and institutional strengthening of the media.
