Education transforms lives and is at the heart of UNESCO’s mission to build peace, eradicate poverty and drive sustainable development.

UNESCO is committed to a holistic and humanistic vision of quality education worldwide, the realisation of everyone’s right to education, and the belief that education plays a fundamental role in human, social and economic development. As the only United Nations agency with a mandate to cover all aspects of education, UNESCO provides global and regional leadership, strengthens education systems worldwide and responds to contemporary global challenges through education, with gender equality as an underlying principle. Its work encompasses educational development from pre-school to higher education and beyond.

Since 2015, UNESCO has taken a leading role in the coordination and monitoring of the Global Education 2030 Agenda. The vision of the Education Sector is captured in Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”.

Since its establishment in Nepal in 1998, the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu has been working closely with multiple partners at all levels. Working in collaboration with the government, development partners, civil society organisations, research communities, teachers, and youth and students, the Office has provided support through coordinated policy advice, technical assistance and capacity development in education policy analyses. UNESCO has also supported the designing of education sector development plans in support of national educational priorities, such as curriculum reform, teacher policies, Information and Communication Technologies in education, and monitoring of education progress at the national level. Gender Equality and Social Inclusion is a priority and cross-cutting issue in all areas of work. UNESCO’s action in Nepal is centred on and around the key education areas listed below:
