The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education is an importanttool to achieve the broader goals of education and has been identified as an innovative and effective means of teaching and learning. The School Sector Development Plan (SSDP, 2016-2023) has thus envisioned the implementation and expansion of ICT assisted teaching/learning processes in all schools. 

Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Education 2030 Agenda) recognises the immense potential of ICT in ensuring quality lifelong learning for all. It highlights the need for ICTs to “be harnessed to strengthen education systems, knowledge dissemination, information access, quality and effective learning, and more effective service provision”. In this regard, UNESCO provides guidance to the government to build national capacity for strategic development and for the systematic implementation of relevant policies to integrate ICT in education. 

As the government continues to invest in building ICT infrastructure in schools, UNESCO is dedicated to preparing the next generation of teachers who will make use of this new technology in the classroom. The UNESCO Office in Kathmandu supports the government through capacity-building of Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) and helping the government to develop policies and strategies that respond to the evolving needs of learners in the 21^st century. This technical assistance to determine and develop teacher’s ICT competencies and implement competency-based teacher training reforms that facilitate ICT-pedagogy integration are one of UNESCO’s main education priorities. 

With support from UNESCO, the Ministry of Education prepared the “ICT in Education Master Plan 2013-2017”, with a vision to ensure quality education for all through the use of ICT in all aspects of education and to create a knowledge-based society. UNESCO is currently supporting the Government of Nepal to update and develop a revised ICT in Education Master Plan that is aligned with the national targets noted in SDG4.
