8.8.2017 -During a two-day trip to the South American nation, Irina Bokova met with President Michelle Bachelet, representatives of several ministries, and members of other entities that work with UNESCO. The Director General highlighted the development and promotion of public policies in Chile that embody UNESCO’s vision of quality, equitable and inclusive education and the important effort that Chile is making to provide a new institutional structure for work on heritage, cultures and the arts and to promote gender equality. 22 November 2016- Copiapó, Chañaral, Diego de Almagro, Tierra Amarilla, and Alto del Carmen are cities and towns from the Atacama Region (in the north of Chile) where the Pedagogical and Psychosocial Plan entitled “Atacama ¡volvió a clases!” (“Atacama is back in school!”) was implemented. These actions contributed to calming the minds and emotions of the educational communities most affected by the floods in March 2015 caused by heavy rains in the middle of the desert. February 2016- In order to support the reconstruction after the floods that occurred in March 2015 in the North of Chile, while seeking to promote the active participation of young people in community dialogue, students from the Atacama region learned radio broadcasting techniques to make their voice felt and to contribute to the reconstruction of their communities.

January 2016 -According to TERCE results, the use of computers for recreational activities has a negative effect on student learning achievements when considering the socioeconomic and cultural status. The more they use their computers, whether for chatting, communicating via social networks, or listening to music, the lower their achievements are in all assessed subject areas.

Diciembre 2015- El 25 de marzo de 2015 es una fecha difícil de olvidar para los habitantes de la región de Atacama en el norte de Chile. Una serie de aluviones, resultado de intensas lluvias, inusuales para la época y para esta desértica zona, arrasó de este a oeste valles y ciudades, arrastrando todo a su paso. El lodo y el agua se llevaron casas, herramientas, infraestructura comunitaria y escuelas, pero no la capacidad de reconstruirse y avanzar.

The scholarship is an inclusion project for higher education in Chile. It provides economic support for students belonging to the UNESCO Network of Colleges’ Preparatory Courses, developed by several Chilean universities. The scholarship provides resources to fund expenses related to university attendance. Read more

The 8.8 Richter earthquake and subsequent tsunami that occurred in 2010 in Central-Southern Chile, not only proved the force of nature, but also the need for more information in order to handle these disasters. These skills needed to be developed, and UNESCO was there to help. Read more
