Argentina's capital will host the fourth meeting of UNESCO's Latin American Network for Education on the Holocaust and Other Genocides, which will gather senior representatives of ministries of education of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The meeting will be an opportunity to review ongoing activities in the field of Holocaust and genocide education in the Latin America region, as well as to analyze the achievements and challenges of Argentina's policies for addressing traumatic memories through education.

The event will also include presentations on new initiatives to promote education on the Holocaust, genocide and other atrocity crimes and will serve to launch most recent UNESCO publications for the Latin America region: “Education about the Holocaust and Preventing Genocide: A Policy Guide” (2017) and “Teaching about the Holocaust in Latin America: Challenges for Educators and policy-makers” (2017).

The meeting will include an overview of ongoing cooperation with international partners involved with the Network, such as the  UNESCO Chair on Genocide Education at the USC Shoah Foundation, Yad Vashem, Yahad in Unum and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Other international projects will be discussed as well: Yael Siman (Mexico) will present the work and materials of the United States-based organization Facing History and Ourselves in Latin America; Pamela Calderón will speak about the creation and initiatives of the Museum of the Holocaust in Guatemala; and Clara Ramírez‐Barat of the Auschwitz institute for Peace and Reconciliation (United States of America) will present the “Education and Prevention” research project of education materials in Brazil and El Salvador.

The meeting will close with a review of the "road map" for the Network approved in 2014 and with a discussion of future activities and priorities. Prior to that, special guest Jennifer Ciardelli, Director of the Civic and Defense Initiatives of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance Education Working Group, will give a presentation for Network members.

The meeting will be opened by Max Gulmanelli, Secretary of Education Management at the Ministry of Education and Sports of Argentina; Francisco Miguens Campos, Secretary of the Argentina National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO; and Karel Fracapane, Senior Project Officer at UNESCO.

The meeting of the Network will be followed by a sub-regional seminar for education stakeholders of Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, placed under the patronage of UNESCO

The event is made possible through the generous support of the Ministry of Education and Sports of Argentina and of the Ministry of Europe and of Foreign Affairs of France.
