World Water Day

The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/47/193 of 22 December 1992 by which 22 March of each year was declared World Day for Water, to be observed starting in 1993, in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) contained in Chapter 18 (Fresh Water Resources) of Agenda 21. States were invited to devote the Day, as appropriate in the national context, to concrete activities such as the promotion of public awareness through the publication and diffusion of documentaries and the organization of conferences, round tables, seminars and expositions related to the conservation and development of water resources and the implementation of the recommendations of Agenda 21.

World Water Day 2016: Water and Jobs
The connection between water and jobs is not necessarily an obvious one. This year’s World Water Development Report (WWDR 2016) is dedicated to examining this relationship. It analyses how essential water is – not ‘just’ for life as is so often and rightfully claimed - but for jobs and therefore for economic growth, now and in the future.

World Water Day 2015: Water and Sustainable Development
The management of the earth’s water resources must be urgently improved concludes the 2015 United Nations World Water Development Report. The Report will be launched on 20 March in New Delhi (India).

World Water Day 2014: Water and Energy
The main celebrations of World Water Day 2014 will be organized by the United Nations University (UNU) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) on behalf of UN-Water on 20-21 March 2014 and will take place at the UNU Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

World Water Day 2013: Water Cooperation
UNESCO was officially appointed by UN-WATER to lead the preparations for both the International Year and the World Water Day on 22 March 2013 under the theme "Water Cooperation".
