UNESCO’s approach to media development is both knowledge-driven and context-sensitive, taking into account the challenges and opportunities created by the rapidly changing media environment in Nepal. IPDC Special Initiative on Knowledge-Driven Media Development highlights the importance of generating and sharing knowledge to advance media development. It encourages an inclusive, holistic approach to strengthening journalism education worldwide in line with Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030. Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals is dedicated to the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, the provision of access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable institutions at all levels.

In Nepal, the media plays an important role in strengthening democracy, human rights, good governance and citizen engagement. The Office works to promote international professional standards of journalism, public service media and dialogue among media professionals. Activities in this area include:

• Assessing the performance of Community Radios
• Assisting in the establishment of a public service broadcasting system in Nepal
• Celebrating the World Radio Day, held annually on 13 February. It is a day to celebrate radio as a medium; to improve international cooperation between broadcasters; and to encourage a major network and community radio alike to promote access to information, freedom of expression and gender equality over the airwaves.  
• Translating UNESCO standard setting tools into the Nepali language (e.g., “Model Curricula for Journalism Education - Download English Nepali” and “Media Development Indicators Download English Nepali”).
