UNESCO Designated sites - Sustainable Tourism

The project on Sustainable Tourism Development in UNESCO Designated Sites serves to enhance a wider-network of “learning platforms”. Given the increasing number of World Heritage sites, the World Heritage Tourism Programme has adopted a regional “learning platform” strategy to provide economies of scale for tourism planning and management.

The approach suggests that project sites serve as laboratories for training and best practices. Issues such as planning are examined in a regional setting, whereas lessons learned are disseminated to other regional sites and throughout the World Heritage network.

Tourism is an important management issue at both natural and cultural World Heritage sites. It is an industry with well-known costs but also with the potential for aiding protection efforts. We recognize this potential and are convinced that by engaging, and by taking appropriate actions at the different levels of the sustainable tourism process, tourism can be managed to generate net site benefits.
