The future of Venice and its Lagoon in a context of global change. Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1987, the site of Venice and its Lagoon is facing an era of global changes, sharpened by the effects of economic globalization, climate change, and profound social transformations.

Building a shared vision for the safeguarding and sustainable future of the site, through a multi-stakeholder participatory approach, is now of necessity, as well as a test case for sound decision making and management of other sites and cities around the Mediterranean facing similar problems and challenges.

Background

Following the projects on the "Venice Lagoon Ecosystem" and "Venice Inner Canals", this is the “Third Phase” of UNESCO’s involvement in Venice, providing scientific support to decision making for the future of the City and its Lagoon, in a context of uncertainties determined by social-economic transformation and climate change mainly.

Web-Based Geographic Information System

In the course of 2009, the web-based Geographic(al) Information System (WEBGIS) for the sharing of all kind of knowledge/data/maps related to Venice and its Lagoon has been re-launched, as a fundamental basis for further consultations and debates with Venetian stakeholders as well as the building of a consensus for further development and protection of this World Heritage site.

SWOT Analysis

A Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) Analysis is in progress, to further undertake a more systematic consultation with relevant stakeholders. All this is developed in parallel and close synergy with the process initiated by the Venice Municipality and involving all relevant Venetian Authorities towards the preparation and submission of the Management Plan for the Venice and its Lagoon World Heritage site.
