Paris - 15 November 2019

His Excellency Mr. Billy Graham Talagi, Minister of Social Services of Niue, presented during the UNESCO Conventions Ceremony the instrument of ratification of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage to UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.

Niue is located in the South Pacific Ocean and has a longstanding commitment to the protection of the oceans. The country is known for having one of the largest marine protected areas of the world. It now decided to protect also the cultural heritage located in its waters. The ratification of the 2001 Convention, which will formally take effect in three months, strengthens international cooperation in this area. Niue will thus become the 63nd State Party to this important legal instrument.
